So why choose the department of Mathematics at Aberystwyth University?
Aberystwyth is a vibrant, cosmopolitan bilingual university town, between the rolling Cambrian mountains and the stunning coastline of Cardigan Bay. You’ll be part of a campus university with its own sports centre, a busy Arts Centre; and you’ll be next door to the National Library of Wales, only one in five copyright libraries in the UK.

Our mathematics courses are accredited by the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), and the curriculum enables students to take joint courses with other departments in the university and to specialise in areas such as mathematical physics. Within Wales, the Department has a leading role in the provision of mathematics in higher education through the medium of Welsh.

As a department, we have an excellent reputation for the quality of our teaching, learning environment and the cultural experience we offer to our students. In the 2017 National Student Survey, our department was ranked 3rd in the UK for satisfaction with Teaching on the course for the subject mathematics and statistics. We have also scored 94% student satisfaction for teaching on the course , 93% student satisfaction for academic support and 94% student satisfaction for learning resources. (NSS, 2017). This demonstrates our dedication and commitment to provide an experience that is memorable and will prepare you well for your future. 

Our staff expertise in research covers a broad range of mathematics, including operator algebras, solid and fluid mechanics, and quantum mechanics. A great deal of research activity is interdisciplinary, involving collaborators in physics, computer science and engineering and partners in industry. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, all of our research was judged as 2* (internationally recognised) and above, with one in eight of our outputs world leading.
