Welcome to the department of History & Welsh History.

History has been taught at Aberystwyth since the foundation of the University in 1872, making the Department of History and Welsh History the oldest history department in Wales and one of the foremost in Britain. The Department is committed to small-group teaching and one-to-one support, and our flexible course structures mean you can tailor your degree to reflect your own needs and interests.

So why choose Aberystwyth History & Welsh History department?

At Aber (as the locals say), you will be living in a vibrant, cosmopolitan bilingual university town, located between the rolling Cambrian mountains and the stunning coastline of Cardigan Bay. You’ll be part of a campus university with its own sports centre, a busy Arts Centre; and you’ll be next door to the National Library of Wales, only one in five copyright libraries in the UK.

The teaching and research interests of our academic staff span the period from the medieval to the modern world, and are reflected in a broad range of political, social and cultural history modules. We pride ourselves on the friendliness and informality of relations between staff and students. Our Staff-Student Committee represents your interests and there is a lively History Society which organizes guest lectures, visits to places of interest and social events.

As a department, we believe in maintaining an excellent reputation for the quality of our teaching, learning environment and cultural experience that we offer to you the student. In the 2017, National Student Survey, our department achieved an impressive score of 92% for overall student satisfaction in the department, this figure is significantly higher than the UK figure of 84%.

Our exciting and work place relevant degree schemes are highly regarded by both students and employers. Just this year an incredible 95.4% of our graduates were in employment or further study 6 months after graduation (HESA, 2017).  This demonstrates that our innovative teaching gives you a smooth transition from campus to career.

Our graduates are able to find interesting, well-paid work after graduation. During your time in our department, we offer all students to take part in the YES (Year in Employment Scheme). Students on this scheme have found employment in Education, Law, Publishing, Politics, The Civil Service, Media and the Armed Forces.
