School of Geography and Earth Science

Welcome to one of the oldest and largest departments of Geography and Earth Science in the UK.

Welcome to one of the oldest and largest departments of Geography and Earth Science in the UK. Aberystwyth was the first department in the country to offer students single honours degrees in human geography and physical geography, making us the most experienced, too. We have always been at the cutting edge of innovations in teaching and research, which is why Aberystwyth is the UK University of the Year for Teaching Quality (The Times & The Sunday Times, The Complete University Guide 2018).

So why choose Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University?

Aberystwyth is a vibrant, cosmopolitan bilingual university town, between the rolling Cambrian mountains and the stunning coastline of Cardigan Bay.

Aberystwyth is a geographer’s dream. As you can imagine, we benefit from a wealth of resource right on our doorstep that include mountains, rivers, sea, urbanism. At Aber, you will explore Geography in a way that no other University can offer. You will be part of a campus university with its own sports centre, a busy Arts Centre; and you will be next door to the National Library of Wales, only one in five copyright libraries in the UK.

Our degree schemes attract recognition from the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers), demonstrating to you that our degrees are creditable and will also give you a head start in the competitive job market.

The department of Geography & Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University has an excellent reputation for the quality of its teaching, learning environment and the cultural experience it offers it students. In the 2017 National Student Survey, our department was ranked Top 5 in the UK for learning opportunities in our Human Geography degrees, and we are proud to have achieved 90% overall student satisfaction in our department.

If you are interested or just relish the idea of studying or working whilst at University, we offer Geography and both Physical and Human Geography with integrated year in industry or study abroad with our partnered international Universities such as University of Bergen, Oulu, Finland and the University Centre in Svalbard. On an international level we are partnered with Purdue University (Indiana), University of Alabama, University of Georgia, University of Montana.  These two schemes will give you valuable experience in the work place or adjusting to new life in a different country.

Our dedication to your future is demonstrated by the employability results of the department. Just this year, an incredible 95% of our graduates were in work or further study within 6 months after graduation that is 3% higher than students in the Physical Science degree category nationally (HESA, 2017).  This demonstrates that our innovative teaching gives you a smooth transition from campus to career.
