Applied Science Computing Engineering

Introduction
The School of Applied Science, Computing and Engineering is driven by its innovative spirit to assist industry through its expertise and improve technology through its creativity. The team are at the forefront of best practice and their advice is sought by many organisations in the region.

For students they offer a ‘hands-on’ environment where practical experience supports every aspect of learning whether this is through the facilities at the University to create ‘real’ scenarios or through industry visits and opportunities to enter competitions.

Cross-disciplinary research work and industry collaborations are common between departments and a variety of specialisms exist within the School. Their research has been recognised nationally and internationally and many of the team have presented their work world-wide.

Departments
Built Environment
The academic team prides itself on the supportive and friendly learning environment that it offers students. Lecturers are all members of their associated professional bodies within the architecture, housing and construction industries, and use their expertise and direct industry experience to develop relationships with the sector, benefiting their research and students’ learning.

A real work environment is fostered for students with the inclusion of site visits, projects based on real sites and ‘live’ projects. The lecturers act as consultants on many local projects. The architectural design technology courses are also accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technicians (CIAT).

Computing
Glyndwr University boasts an award-winning computing department – judged 'world leading' in the last UK research assessment (RAE 2008).

The subject team have a strong relationship with the British Computer Society, the IEEE, ACM and IFIP and the department is home of ARClab, a renowned research centre for computing and digital technology who host a biennial internet research conference. The intelligent design automation research of the department was judged as “world leading” in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. The department has also been successful in achieving funding for developing a range of intelligent kitchen appliances for use by elderly or disabled people.

The computing subject area is a recognised Cisco Academy. The courses provide an opportunity to participate in the CISCO Academy Programmes and qualify for CISCO accreditation. The team, who have experience in the industry themselves also focus on giving students an excellent knowledge and experience of the working world through ‘live’ briefs for projects, regular contact with professionals in the industry and the opportunity to attend events.

Cross disciplinary projects and research are encouraged with computer specialisms and with linked areas such as the School of Creative Arts at the university.

Engineering and Applied Science
This department covers a wide spectrum of engineering specialisms as well as leading the way with renewable energy and sustainable technologies.

The team are passionate about training students in the skills and knowledge that industry is looking for and they have strong links with organisations in the region including UPM, JCB, Airbus. Toyota, Polybush, Rolls-Royce, Magellan and Raytheon. Students are actively given opportunities to work on ‘real’ projects and even have a Formula student team.

The academics have strong links with professional bodies such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), Energy Institute (EI), the Association of Building Engineers, the Engineering Council and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and courses benefit from being accredited by their related body.

The university has invested £500K in engineering equipment in recent years, in association with an investment of equipment from major companies and local suppliers.

Science and Environment
There are a number of research centres and specialisms within the department and these enable the team to have a strong industry focus which translates into the opportunities that can be offered to students in this area such as industry visits and ‘live’ briefs. There are established links with industry including the industries of chemical, forensic, analytical and material sciences. The team boasts world-leading research in materials science and manufacturing.

The forensic science team have a long-term collaboration with North Wales Police on research projects and students are set crime scene investigation scenarios by senior CSIs, as well as having the opportunity to practice courtroom scenarios with real barristers.

The team are also members of their related professional bodies including the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences.
