Description

Course description
The BA (Hons) Economics and Social Statistics degree - or BA (Econ) for short - is a new course at The University of Manchester for 2018.

This flexible, innovative course brings together research-led teaching in accounting, business, economics, finance, politics and sociology and offers a considerable depth of insight into contemporary business. Other key features include:

learning from key experts in contemporary business and social sciences;
developing specialist working knowledge of social statistics;
enjoying a broad degree course that offers flexibility and choice;
working within a community of students studying different disciplines; and
Having the opportunity to study abroad for a semester.
Economics doesn't function in isolation, which is why you'll study it in context at Manchester. Commercial practices are best understood and explored through an understanding of the environments in which businesses function.

Aims
This course offers advanced social statistics teaching for students with a grounding in maths and/or statistics (gained either at A-level or on the specialist first year course units you'll take alongside all of our BA Econ students).

Social statistics uses data, which can be numbers, text, sounds, images, memories or experiences; to study human behaviour and social environments. We will use it to ask questions about business environments, the ways they function and their impact.

Your contact with a broad range of disciplines within the BA (Econ) means you'll gain a range of perspectives on business, for example:

politics - the effects of government policy, regulation and public spending and their impact on businesses and economies;
economics - the role of the labour and finance markets, micro- and macroeconomic factors;
Sociology - employees and consumer, behaviour, demographic changes and how companies must adapt to changing populations.
Special features
The BA (Econ) in Economics and Social Statistics course is one of the largest degrees in the University's School of Social Sciences and you'll be joining a community of students specialising in a wide variety of disciplines, including our three new Social Statistics pathways.

Despite our size, the BA (Econ) has a strong sense of identity and a tight-knit community of students working together across their disciplines. The flexibility of the degree means you can specialise in the areas that fascinate you, while also being assured of a broad grounding in economics and its related disciplines.

Each of your course units has been developed from the research of specialists in their fields, from the School of Social Sciences (Economics, Politics, Philosophy and Sociology) and Alliance Manchester Business School (Accounting, Finance, Business Law, Marketing and Human Resource Management).

Economics with social statistics, politics, sociology or philosophy, all share a common first year. In some cases it's possible to swap to a different pathway after the first year.

At the end of your course, your degree title will be: BA (Hons) Economic and Social Statistics.

Teaching and learning
Economics course units feature formal lectures supported by smaller tutorials or seminars, in which you will be able to explore the contents of lectures and recommended reading in greater depth.

Tutorials and seminars are also key elements in improving your written and oral communication skills through group discussions, essay-writing and presentations.

Students are assigned an Academic Advisor, a member of staff who takes a friendly interest in your progress and can advise you on selecting course units and career opportunities.

Coursework and assessment
The BA (Hons) Economics and Social Studies programme, and the Economics and Social Statistics specialisation in particular, offers a wide variety of course units.

The way that you study and are assessed will depend on which units you choose. The range of methods is carefully designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding, including:

essays, coursework and other mid-term evaluations allow fuller development of and feedback on students' knowledge and understanding;
dissertations promote the development of argument and fuller understanding of academic material and test the extent to which students can carry out work independently;
presentations or group projects promote the development of teamwork; and
Exams.
Course content for year 1
The first year is designed to give you a solid foundation in the study of Economics and a wider understanding of the business environment.

The Economics and Social Statistics pathway of the BA (Hons) Economic and Social Studies programme is a modular course and in your first year you take 120 credits overall (so between 10-12 individual course units) made up of:

40 credits of Economics
20 credits of Mathematics/Statistics
40 credits of Social Sciences - eg Sociology, Social Anthropology or Philosophy
Remaining 20 credits from other disciplines - including Social Sciences, Finance, Development, Applied Statistics, Economic History or Study Skills.
At the end of your first year you can change onto another pathway, such as Development Studies or Economics and Politics, depending on your own academic interests, as they all share a common first year.
