LLB Law is a specialised undergraduate law degree which will enable you to develop the skills, knowledge and professional network to be highly employable, whether you have ambitions to practise law or enter a different field of work.

You will learn the necessary foundational subjects of a qualifying law degree, as well as being able to choose from the extensive range of optional units offered by our diverse team of law, criminology and ethics specialists.

Aims
The course will provide you with:

an understanding of law as an academic discipline, at a breadth and depth appropriate to a first degree qualification;
the Academic Stage of training for the General Council of the Bar and the Law Society of England and Wales;
a strong grounding in the basic principles and rules of English Law and European Law and an understanding of legal principles and rules in other legal systems;
an appreciation of the responsibilities of lawyers to the courts, the legal profession, the community and individuals within them;
a range of legal and transferable skills, and a broad understanding of society and of the role of law within society;
meetings with members of the law profession and international staff, students and visiting speakers;
the opportunity to practise your skills working on real legal cases;
the opportunity to apply to study abroad in your third year as an additional year of study.

Volunteer for the Legal Advice Centre

LLB Law students are offered the opportunity to work in one of the School's award-winning Legal Advice Centres, where you can help provide free, confidential legal advice to the public, under supervision.

If there is a particular area you are interested in developing further, you can volunteer for relevant clinics to gain specific knowledge.

Student societies

Getting involved in a society is a great way to enhance your CV, developing the transferable skills and experience by, for example, organising an end-of-year ball, maintaining a website or acting as a treasurer.

Our two main course societies are student-led and organise social, career and academic-related events, as well as running a number of specialised groups to help you make the most of your time at Manchester.

Study abroad

Studying abroad allows you to experience and understand different cultures and perspectives, while broadening your academic studies and discovering different styles of education. We have built excellent relationships with numerous partner universities both within and outside Europe, and you will be able to choose to study in English.

Teaching and learning
Formal based contact hours consisting of lectures and seminars, amount to between 10 and 12 hours per week. You will to spend in the region of 40 hours per week studying inclusive of lectures and seminars.

Lectures are delivered to a large cohort of students, covering an overview of a particular subject. Seminars are for small groups of up to 12 students and an academic member of staff. You will discuss and present aspects of a legal topic which you are learning. You are expected to prepare in advance for the discussion and you are also required to submit written work for each subject.

If you take the study abroad route, you will complete course units in your host university, taught in English, which may focus on Law subjects, or include other topics of interest.

We also offer skills sessions throughout the year, working in conjunction with academics, local and international lawyers and our Careers Service to enhance our students' academic progression and employability.

In addition, weekly in-sessional classes are offered to help students with English research and essay-writing skills.
