Description

Learn the history, theory and practice behind building conservation in one of the world’s most architecturally significant cities.

If you are looking for in-depth technical training in the structural and architectural conservation of buildings, there are few places better to do this than in the World Heritage City of Bath. Our unique location gives us ideal study material and a rich environment to draw on as you learn about classical architecture in a classical city.

Our course develops your understanding of the principles of structural and architectural conservation. You’ll learn the philosophy, law and policy needed to make informed decisions in conservation.

Case studies give you the opportunity to visit historic building sites in the UK and see conservation in practice. These field visits will give you a deeper understanding of approaches to the repair and re-use of old buildings in our built heritage. You'll combine detailed knowledge with training in conservation techniques for materials and structures. These include exploring principles, faults, causes, diagnoses and remedies. This equips you with the practical skills to achieve a high level of architectural correctness and competence.

You will learn from leading architects, structural engineers and related professionals in our Department of Architecture & civil Engineering. Our course is based on the Department's well-established tradition of interdisciplinary education and training. We also have regular guest lectures from leading practitioners in this field giving you the chance to build connections with experts in industry. We have a range of professional speakers including conservation engineers and architects, specialist contractors and members of Historic England.

The academic, practical and interpersonal skills you develop on our accredited course will help start your career in engineering, architecture and surveying professions. You'll graduate with the ability to make a real contribution to the preservation of our architectural landscape. Graduates have gone on to work in roles like these:

Inspectors and managers at Historic England and English Heritage
Senior National Trust managers and national amenity society inspectors
Local authority conservation officers
Conservation architects, engineers and surveyors in specialist practices
You could also choose to continue your studies with us on on our PhD programme.
