Description
Aeroacoustics of jet installation
The Fluid and Aerodynamics Research Group has strong links with the aviation industry. Among several engineering challenges that the aviation industry has to face in the design and construction of their next generation floats, much attention has been explicitly given to the attenuation of the noise emitted by the propulsion system. Early investigations show that when a jet flow interacts with a flat plate, certain acoustic modes located in the potential region of the jet flow are enormously excited (see figure below). With the aim of mitigating the acoustic emission of the propulsion system interacting with the aircraft wing, the aeroacoustics of jet installation will be investigated in the present PhD project. In particular, the effects of installation will be studied in the new anechoic wind tunnel at the University of Bristol, with arrays of microphones, hot-wire anemometry, and particle image velocimetry. During the project, the doctoral student will present the salient results of his/her research work at international conferences all over the world. This fully-funded studentship is addressed to Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering graduates from UK Universities in possession of UK/EU citizenship.
