OVERVIEW
Opportunities are available to study for the research degrees of MPhil and PhD, either full-time or part-time. Research is focused on a number of different Research Institutes across the University.
The Dalton Research Institute
The Dalton Research Institute is pre-eminent in fields from climate change to surface coatings, transportation to food technology. Our researchers benefit from superbly equipped laboratories and computer facilities as well as a strong portfolio of funding bodies that includes Research Councils, the EU, UN, government and industry.
The Institute features four internationally-known research groups, which specialise in environmental science, material science, computer science and engineering. Each of these groups has a vibrant research programme, combining advanced theoretical exploration with dynamic international, often cross-disciplinary partnerships. Our research alliances extend throughout the academic, industrial, government and regulatory world, giving us an influential voice in the way policy is developed and applied.
The Graduate School of the Faculty of Science and Engineering has almost 200 postgraduate researchers. The School provides a focus for their activities in terms of skills development, and runs seminars and conferences where researchers can exchange ideas and develop their presentation skills.
School of Biology, Chemistry and Health Science
Research is also available at the School of Biology, Chemistry and Health Science. There are a number of active research groups with the department of Biological Sciences, some of whom form part of the Research Institute for Health & Social Change mentioned above. The Research Groups in Biology comprise the following: Behavioural and Environmental Biology Group, Human Physiology Group, providing a focus for skills development in a faculty that has a thriving graduate school, including seminars and conferences where research students can exchange ideas and develop their presentation skills.
