Description

From the neuroscience of behaviour to the social construction of reality, this degree will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in psychology and beyond.

Our psychology degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society, and so is your first step towards becoming a chartered psychologist working in areas such as forensic, occupational and clinical psychology. The abilities you develop will also serve you well in related areas such as teaching, human resources, health and social care, and research.

You’ll have opportunities to examine topics such as what brain events occur during a phobic reaction, how to maintain psychological wellbeing, and why some people are psychopaths.

In your first year you’ll cover the core conceptual frameworks in psychology, how to investigate psychological questions, and ways that psychology can help us in everyday life. In your second and third years you’ll choose from a range of specialist modules including Forensic Psychology, Psychology of Wellbeing, Psychology of Gender and Sexuality, and Cognitive Neuroscience.

You can choose to take a brief internship with an external organisation, gaining skills and experience useful for your intended career. Recent internships have been completed with the Rethink self-harm helpline, the learning support team at an FE college, and marketing for a local company. You’ll also undertake a live research project in an area of psychology that interests you and matches your career goals.

Students have recently investigated psychopathy and brain activity, psychological issues around eating disorders, animal therapy, and motivations in physical exercise. You’ll benefit from specialist facilities in our psychology laboratories, including electroencephalogram (EEG) equipment to measure brain activity, and virtual reality facilities to investigate how environments shape thoughts, feelings and behavior.
