Description

Focus on knowledge and skills relevant to the real world

Examine the causes of offending behaviour, the effects of crime on victims and the operation of the criminal justice system. From studying international crime in Canada to examining street offences with Gloucestershire Police, you’ll graduate well-prepared for a career in forensic psychology or the criminal justice system.

You’ll be taught by expert lecturers, including a leading homicide expert who advises the government, works with the police and makes regular media appearances, and Chartered Forensic Psychologists with a wealth of practice experience.

The degree is designed as a single coherent course, with lecturers with expertise in criminology and psychology working together to integrate insights from the two disciplines. You’ll have the flexibility to shape your own syllabus to suit your future plans, whether that’s qualifying as a forensic psychologist or joining the police service.

The course has a focus on practical, real world knowledge, and offers opportunities to work on real-world projects – from identifying homicide risks with our Homicide Research Group to examining street crime with Gloucestershire Police as part of our Student Community Patrol. You’ll have opportunities to gain real-world experience through an internship, and to see the bigger picture with an international field trip.

In your first year you’ll be given a firm grounding in both criminology and psychology, including the criminal justice system and the role of the psychologist in the system, and the foundations of research and theory in the social sciences. In the second and third years you will have the opportunity to specialise your learning through optional modules such as Crime Science, Forensic Psychology, Policing in the Community, and Psychology of Wellbeing.

You’ll also develop advanced skills in research design and analysis, directing your own research in an area that interests you. Throughout the syllabus you will be develop high-level skills and expertise to match your interests and career goals.

This degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). By following the accredited route through the programme you’ll achieve the Graduate Basis for Chartered membership, your first step to becoming a Chartered Psychologist.
