Description

Develop advanced technical skills, learn to patent your designs and prepare a professional portfolio ready for industry. You’ll work real business briefs on this course – from the development of mobile apps, fly drones and a European MCU rally car, to hardware platforms and mission critical software. Computing problem solving and software engineering are the focus of this degree.

You’ll develop skills in high and low level languages including C/C++, Java, Python, HTML5 and CSS and will use a range of Agile Methods including Scrum. You’ll present your work in a professional manner, developing an industry-ready portfolio of your projects and achievements.

From the beginning of the course, you'll work on real-life projects. Students have recently built mobile apps for businesses as well as a card-based visitor information system. From your second year onwards, you'll be supported to pursue your own paid freelance work to develop your experience and portfolio. You'll also have the opportunity to travel to Germany to race your own-built line-tracing robotic car in the European Renesas MCU Car Rally. The MCU Car Rally is held as part of the Embedded World event in connection with AND Technology Research Ltd and Renesas Electronics.

On our four-year sandwich degree, you can get a head start with your career with a one-year work placement. Recent work placement destinations include Accenture, Hewlett Packard, Fujitsu, GE Capital and Renishaw. Students often get their graduate jobs with these organisations.  You'll learn in our new purpose-built School of Computing and Technology. This includes: a dedicated research lab; purpose-built break-out areas for workshop sessions; games consoles and screens in social areas; and the latest computing technology and software. You’ll use tools and operating systems such as Android, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Drones, Photoshop, Microsoft, Oracle and Cisco.
