Description
Develop skills in managing sports events, facilities and people, as well as capitalising on business opportunities in this dynamic industry. Gain experience through professional placements. Students have recently worked for Ironman UK, Gloucestershire FA, Mark Johnston Racing, Gullivers Sports Travel as well as for sports businesses in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
The commercial sports sector is fast-moving. This course reflects its diversity, focusing on developing your skills for employability. Your first year will introduce you to the fundamentals of sports business as well as community sports provision. Learn why sport is so important to people and examine the policies and protocols that govern the industry.
In your second and final years you’ll deepen your commercial knowledge. Gain experience on a professional placement as well as managing real-life sports events. Choose modules to match your interests and career goals. You could choose to study topics such as sports-tour management, community sport partnerships, digital media and sport, or event design and production.
You’ll gain industry insights on field trips with recent excursions including sporting venues such as Cheltenham Racecourse (home to the Cheltenham Festival, our yearly horse-racing event that welcomes around 250,000 visitors each year), Gloucester Rugby Club, the Principality Stadium in Cardiff and St Pierre Marriot Hotel and Country Club, among Europe's premier golfing venues.
You’ll also build your industry understanding through sports practitioners in lectures with recent guests including professionals from The Football People, Cricket South Africa, Severn Stars Professional Netball Team, Gloucester Rugby and Aspire Sport and Cultural Trust.
Students starting in September 2019 will have the option to undertake an international field trip at no additional cost.
