Description

Developed in partnership with North Wales Police (NWP), the BA (Hons) Policing Programme* combines lectures, seminars and workshops delivered by experienced academics and police officers, based on the Police National Curriculum, with role-play scenarios to provide practical experience. Students will also have the opportunity to apply to North Wales Police to become a Special Constable to gain operational experience.

In year one students are introduced to key legislation and the practical aspects and procedures employed in policing duties and at this point will have the opportunity to apply to become a Special Constable.  Upon successfully being appointed as a Special Constable, students will study the Special Constable Initial Police Learning and Development Programme with NWP, following which they will undertake shifts alongside regular police officers as they work through their Personal Development Plan.  Students will be expected to undertake 16 hours of independent patrol per month during year three of their degree.

In years 2 and 3, through their academic studies students will develop their knowledge of the law, policing and the broader criminal justice system. Those students who become Special Constables will continue to develop their operational knowledge and skills during years 2 and 3 and will work towards Independent Patrol Status. Successful completion of the programme will equip students with all the necessary knowledge, practical experience, and key skills to meet the requirements of the police service.

The current policing degree has been granted Pre-Join 2017-18 Approved Provider status by the College of Policing and meets the current professional requirements for the Certificate in Knowledge of Policing (CKP).

*Subject to Re-Validation. The University reviews its courses on a regular basis to ensure that they reflect the needs of students and employers. To do this we have a schedule for approving new programmes, and updating existing ones. Some are awaiting their turn in the approval cycle and are shown as 'subject to validation'. As soon as the award is validated, details will be amended automatically. For those courses listed as subject to validation, please contact the Admissions Office on 01978 293439 for further information.  Once a programme that you have applied for is validated, details will be communicated to you. If you are not happy with the changes made and wish to withdraw your choice, the University will assist you with finding an alternative programme.
