Description

New genetic and genomic technologies are allowing us to develop a much more detailed understanding of the link between our genes and health. In recent years there has been international recognition that these technologies have the potential to revolutionise medicine and public health. However, to realise this vision we need people with the specialised knowledge base, understanding and skill sets for application and delivery of genomic and precision medicine in medical and clinical institutions, academic institutions and industry.

This program is linked to the Welsh Government all-Wales strategy to offer training and education in Genomic and Precision Medicine related subjects to support the development of the clinical, and clinical-associated workforce in Wales. The course will provide the opportunity to develop a fundamental understanding of the platform technologies employed in genomics analysis, utilise genomic data-analytical skills to make clinically and patient relevant interpretations of results and data and, importantly accurately and ethically report and convey findings to colleagues and patients.

The program’s modular design and delivery formats are optimised for healthcare professionals and students, in, or entering into the clinic or clinically-associated environment, throughout Wales.

This programme will provide a multi-disciplinary and multi-professional perspective of the current and rapidly developing field of genomics, genomic applications and precision medicine, in both the clinic and in research. The course is based on the Genomic Medicine MSc programme framework of the Health Education England (HEE) training programme.

Using the very latest methodologies, the programme will provide the opportunity to develop knowledge and critical understanding of cutting edge developments in genomic and precision, and how research is driving the rapidly-changing clinical and research environments.

Successful students will gain an in depth understanding of the important genomic technologies and be able to use genomic information and data as part of a diagnostic, prognostic and treatment pathway. Knowledge of the computational and bioinformatics requirements of genomic and precision medicine (including concepts of data quality, statistical methods and biological interpretation) will be covered together with the importance of recognition of ethical, legal and social issues that play an important role in the development and application of genomic methods to healthcare. Students will also learn how to engage and communicate effectively, with diverse communities, and how to summarise and disseminate information including test results in oral and written forms to colleagues, patients and the public.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Teaching occurs via lectures, practical classes and group work - including case centred discussions delivered by academic clinicians who hold joint University and Health board contracts. Students benefit from a high number of contact hours that includes utilisation of our state-of-the art teaching laboratories. Academic assessment methods include written reports, oral and poster presentations and continuous assessment essays.
