The Professional Doctorate in Public Health provides students with a structured programme to advance scholarship within their professional practice in public health. It enables applied practitioners to adopt leadership roles and advance their career by completing a substantive piece of research alongside a taught programme focused on examining key areas of public health, health promotion and research. In this context, the taught component provides a core set of skills and knowledge required to manage change, lead public health and health programmes, and to work with individuals, groups and communities. This is augmented by optional modules that broaden the students’ experience, enabling them to build a more in depth knowledge of subject areas such as utilizing clinical trials, greater knowledge of discrete public health areas such as co-producing health or nutrition or skills in evidence-synthesis.
Overall, the Professional Doctorate in Public Health seeks to attract high calibre students who wish to complete a taught programme with the development of particular research questions that can be explored through a substantive piece of research in their host organization. As this Doctoral programme includes a taught element, students are admitted at fixed points in the year in order to attend a programme of taught courses during Years 1 and 2. The Professional Doctorate program allows the students to apply the learning to their professional practice while studying the subject to a doctoral level.
