Description
This blended learning programme is an excellent opportunity for any nurse new to general practice. The pathway encourages the practice nurse to develop basic skills and enables each student to enhance their development with pertinent modules choices such as minor illness and contraception. The core module of this programme (General Practice Nursing) links to the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP, 2012) General Practice Nurse Competencies.
The General Practice Nursing course is a blended learning module which only expects Nurses to attend 1 day a week for 6 days in total, the rest will be completed on line through on line learning opportunities. This course is lead by experienced Nurse practioners and will focus on upskilling students in the following areas:
- Communication with patients, consultation skills, history taking
- Immunisations and vaccinations,
- Wound care, ear care management
- Triage and dealing with emergencies
- Diagnostic and screening tests
- Common medical conditions
- Supporting Long Term Conditions

AND two other modules from:
- Minor Illness
- Mentorship, Learning and Preceptorship OR Work Based Learning
- Leg Ulcers
- Contraception and Public Health
Students can RPL previous modules which fit into the programme or RPL modules taken as associate students (in line with current University guidance).
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
The modules under the pathway will use a variety of assessments such as assignments, on line assessments and clinical examinations.
