Description
The MA in Urban History will provide you with a broad introduction to the historical study of towns and cities from classical antiquity to modern times. Our course is the only Urban History MA in the UK and attracts students from the across the globe.
The exciting and challenging course will enhance your historical understanding and allow you to concentrate on specialist fields including the cultural and social history of British and Irish towns, urban behaviour and landscapes, global and colonial cities, and contemporary issues in urban regeneration and conservation.
You will have the opportunity to acquire advanced research and analytical skills and will develop your capability to work independently on a large scale research project. Our course also gives you the structure to develop your transferable skills including oral and written presentation techniques which can be used if you're thinking of continuing to doctoral level or to pursue careers in other areas.
You will take part in visits to local and national archives and trips to historical sites.
In the first semester you will take the two core modules Historical Research Methods and The City in History. During the second semester you will have the opportunity to select from a variety of options to suit your interests. You will also write a 20,000-word dissertation on an approved topic of your choice under the direction of a supervisor.
