Description

The Banking and Finance BA combines the study of modern economics with banking and finance. You will be introduced to a broad range of economic subjects including banking, financial intermediation, asset and liability management, financial decision making, financial markets and institutions, and accounting. This wide range of topics will give you an in-depth understanding of the way that organisations and financial systems work.

You will also learn to apply microeconomic and macroeconomic theory in financial contexts, for example the appraisal of competing investment opportunities – how to choose between investments which offer the same financial returns – and how government policy influences the stock market.

The first year of this degree is common to the following BA degrees:

Banking and Finance BA
Business Economics BA
Economics BA
Economics and Accounting BA
Financial Economics BA
This means that you will have the option to switch to one of the BA degrees in this list during your first year.

A Banking and Finance BA will prepare you for a career in the private sector, including banking and finance, and in central banking and regulatory agencies. Your time here will also equip you with the research techniques that are vital to postgraduate study

Our staff are internationally renowned and have acted as advisers and consultants to many international and national organisations, including the European Central Bank, the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the Central Bank of Poland, the Central Bank of Greece and a number of UK Government departments.

To help you develop the skills that leading employers ask for, and let you see how traders work, we have 12 Bloomberg terminals in the University Library.

The close relationship between research and teaching is one of the great advantages of studying with us. We welcome talented students from countries all over the world.

What's the difference?
The Banking and Finance BA differs from the Banking and Finance BSc in the topics that you will study, as well as the entry requirements.

For the BA:
You will need to have achieved a GCSE in Maths - at least a grade B.
You will focus on the development of your skills as an economist through their application to a wide range of real world issues.
For the BSc:
You will need to have achieved an A-level in Maths - at least grade B.
You will gain experience in the use of advanced mathematical and statistical techniques in economic analysis and its applications.
